Vision Rehabilitation Resources

What are Vision Rehabilitation Services?

Vision rehabilitation services focus on assisting those who have lost vision, are blind, or have low vision, to continue to do routine activities of daily living on an independent basis. Services may be provided by certified Low Vision Therapists (CLVT), Vision Rehabilitation Therapists (CVRTs) and Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS).

Low Vision Therapists (CLVT) teach people how to use their remaining vision using optical devices (e.g. special lenses for reading or watching t.v.), non-optical devices (e.g. special sunglasses, filters or visors) and assistive technology. They can also recommend changes in the home, work or school environments that may assist with visual functioning (e.g. recommendations to address lighting and glare, or use of contrast to aid to increase safety in areas such as curbs or stairs).

Vision Rehabilitation Specialists (CVRT) teaching adaptive techniques for everyday activities (e.g. reading and writing, cooking, cleaning, using the telephone, personal self-care, financial management, recreation activities, etc.).

Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS) focus on teaching the skills and concepts needed for safe independent movement and travel in people’s homes, school, work and community environments. This may involve the use of a long cane and/or electronic travel devices (such as accessible GPS), and teaching skills for safe street crossings and use public transportation.
